Starting in the 1960s, the Shaw Brothers began collaborating with Japan's major studios in order to boost the development of the studio and Asian cinema in general. This period saw fairly regular joint productions and the importing of overseas talent like director Inoue Umetsugu and cinematographers Nishimoto Tadashi and Miyaki Yukio. Riding on the James Bond wave, the 1960s also saw the Shaw Brothers taking on Bond-style spy actioners, with quite a few of them employing Japanese directors. Just in 1967, the studio released Umetsugu Inoue's Operation Lipstick, Nakahira Ko's Inter-pol, and Matsuo Akinori's amusingly titled Asia-pol.
A joint production with Nikkatsu, Asia-pol was shot completely in Japan, with top star Wang Yu in the leading role as the smooth special agent. The one-armed swordsman carves a unique hero in this entertaining spy actioner, mixing Bond glamour with Shaw Brothers moves. The film co-stars popular Japanese actress Asaoka Ruriko and action star Nitani Hideaki, as well as Shaw Brothers stars Fong Ying and Wong Hap and Nikkatsu talent Shishido Jo.
