A very experimental first directing

This short film is the first one directed by Edmond Pang Ho Cheung - he has written a script for another short movie, called Out of the Blue in 1995. This is a good introduction to his work, as it shows some bits of what his future movies will be. First interesting point, the atmosphere is quite heavy, unlike his first two directings, but the black humor is already there. It's also a good hint about his will to direct serious movies, including thriller or scary movies. Second interesting point, the directing is a little bit too MTV-like, but it already features some interesting effects which will be used later in his movies. Also, the special effects are surprisingly good and original for a short movie. Shot in 35mm, the movie really looks nice.

Overall, Summer Exercise is an interesting short movie, quite intriguing and humorous. Give it a try.
